Hospital care for Covid 19 patients in the densely populated metropolis on the west coast of India, Mumbai, formerly Bombay, is not at its best in times of crisis, as beds and respirators are supposedly in short supply in the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra. According to mobile phone records, patients have been seen lying on the floor or several in one bed. In addition, a video from a hospital ward allegedly showed corpses wrapped in plastic next to patients with Covid-19 symptoms. The situation is particularly threatening in Mumbai, where there are more than one-fifth of all 96,000 known and registered infections in India. One in four deaths due to viral infection also come from the metropolis. India has had a curfew for some time now, and it is now slowly being relaxed. 1.3 billion people live in the second most populous country in the world, with only 0.5 hospital beds per 1,000 inhabitants. For this reason, according to Mangala Gomare, vice chief of the city’s health department, clinics also advise domestic quarantine and release Covid-19 patients home as soon as possible. For comparison, Germany has eight beds in hospitals and clinics per 1,000 inhabitants. The figures are from the OECD, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development.
