A research team from Purdue University, USA has developed a new method for treating black skin cancer (malignant melanoma). The novel patch contains microscopic silicon needles that release their active ingredients into the skin over a period of several months. A special feature of this method is that the patch dissolves completely during treatment – first the surface of the patch and then slowly the silicon needles themselves. This is made possible by the sharp and angular tips of the needles, which according to the research team led by biomedical scientist Chi Hwan Lee are particularly durable and painless to use. In contrast to conventional treatment methods such as chemotherapy, the patches are gentler and can offer a long-term therapeutic approach. The research team is currently looking for potential partners to manufacture and market the patches.
