Flu waves usually pass their peak in January and February of a year. However, at this point, experts at the Stuttgart State Health Office believe that Corona protection measures and flu vaccinations could be responsible for significantly reducing the 2020/21 flu season. Last year, there were 422 confirmed cases of influenza in the Southwest during the comparable September-December period, while the current flu season has so far produced only 29 detections. According to the report, there are also more vaccinated people this winter. In addition, people are wearing masks, keeping their distance and following hygiene rules to avoid contracting the coronavirus. The same protective measures appear to be working for the flu virus, infection control experts say. However, the cold snap in October and the eventual burden on the health care system of two different types of viruses have apparently led to increased demand for influenza vaccinations, especially against influenza A and B viruses, which are transmitted by droplet infection. According to the report, 25 million doses of vaccine have been released for the 2020/21 flu season. In addition, it became apparent as early as March 2020 that school closures were responsible for a shortened final flu season. Nationwide, however, there is not only a decrease in flu cases, but also in those affected with acute respiratory illnesses. Nationwide, there were 23 laboratory-confirmed flu patients reported to the Robert Koch Institute by the 51st reporting week under the Infection Protection Act (IfSG); an age-independent nationwide decline.
