According to scientific researchers at the University Hospital Düsseldorf, there may be a causal link between heart failure sufferers and the occurrence of cancer. According to this, the risk is increased across all types of cancer when sufferers have a weak heart.

65 million people worldwide suffer from heart failure. Therefore, they could also be more likely to develop cancer, according to a ten-year observational study conducted by experts with the participation of researchers from Düsseldorf University Hospital. This is why cancer prevention for this group is so important:

For the analysis, 100,124 people each with and without heart failure were studied in detail, in whom no one had knowingly developed cancer before the study. The subjects were 54 percent female, and on average, the more than 200,000 participants (data from 1,274 primary care practices) were 72.6 years old.

It was shown after the long observation period that the risk for all types of cancer was significantly increased if the subjects suffered from heart failure. Among these, women had a higher incidence of cancer than men with or without a diseased heart.

The risk for certain types of cancer was even significantly increased. People with cancer of the lip, pharynx, and oral cavity had the highest risk. This was followed by tumors of the respiratory tract, female genitalia, skin tumors, cancer of the lymphatic and hematopoietic tissues, digestive tract, etc. Bringing up the rear is cancer of the genital organs in men. The Düsseldorf scientists led by Dr. Mark Luedde assume that certain factors secreted by the diseased heart are related to the stimulation of tumor growth. More detailed analyses will follow, but it is already clear that diabetes, obesity, and heart failure are also closely linked to possible tumor disease.

Therefore, people with an insufficient heart should make regular use of screening examinations because they could be more likely to suffer from cancer than heart-healthy people, say the experts.
