At this year’s BMC Congress in Berlin, health experts focused on data protection and digital business models. For example, the Digital Supply Act (DVG) was welcomed in principle, but according to the panelists, it is only the beginning of a larger development. In this respect, Enrico Jentsch, Chief Operating Officer at Helios, called for new laws on data protection which offer more practical relevance and networking opportunities. He said that sector boundaries are currently problematic in many respects, as they influence, among other things, the duration and costs of patients‘ hospital stays. Similarly, he said that start-ups are finding it difficult to gain a foothold in the market and to offer new technical solutions because they are not integrated into the healthcare system network. However, Jentsch believes that, as service for patients is playing an increasingly important role nowadays, better cooperation between service providers should be sought.
Stephanie Kaiser, CEO, and founder of Heartbeat Labs was critical of the topic of data protection and appealed to the benefits of improving business models, which can only be achieved by evaluating data. Likewise, digital solutions should not be seen as a substitute for people, but rather as a compliment. Inga Bergen, CEO of Magnosco, warned that concerns about data protection issues often held up decision-making processes. However, she noted a positive „spirit of optimism“ in the German healthcare market.
Regarding new business models, Walter Oberhänsli, CEO of Zur Rose Group, sees the future in platform and marketplace solutions. Such a transformation is particularly necessary for the pharmacy sector. Oberhänsli also plans to create a „Healthcare Ecosystem“ for Europe, which will connect patients and doctors and offer e-prescriptions as well as pharmaceuticals, telemedicine, etc. On the other hand, Bergen sees new opportunities for business models more in the area of distribution channels, as reach is the „currency“ of the future.
