Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn plans to introduce the electronic patient file (ePA) in January 2021, when the ePA is to become binding for doctors and hospitals in order to be able to exchange confidential patient data such as medical findings, X-rays and much more. However, it appears that there are problems with the timely availability of PTV4 connectors for the health data network, according to a confidential report of which gematik appears to be the author. It seems that there will be delays, which could delay the start of ePa, which is the core element of the telematic infrastructure (TI). gematik itself has already produced an alternative for access to the ePa, which, without this connector solution, would network local systems of doctors‘ practices and hospitals. However, this gematik solution has been rejected by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) for security reasons. The BSI experts have real security doubts that attackers could gain access to TI without this connector solution. However, according to gematik, the concerns relate only to the ePA client module and not to alternative access routes to the TI through gematik in general. By June 30, 2020, at least one PTV3 manufacturer will probably receive approval for a connector of this class, a BSI spokesperson pointed out, and gematik was at least promised that when the PTV4 connector is on the market, it will be offered to all customers as an upgrade.
