Medtronic plc, a medical technology developer headquartered in Dublin, has developed a new infusion set for people with diabetes. The Medtronic Extended Infusion Set has already been available in Germany since May 10 through the company itself (www.medtronic.com). The set is also already on sale in Finland and Belgium, with other countries to follow this year.

The innovative insulin pump increases the wearing time of the infusion set by up to seven days, which means doubling the wearing time. This results in fewer interruptions and dropouts and fewer punctures in the routine diabetes management of affected individuals.

Pump manufacturer Medtronic’s evaluation program of 100 Finnish subjects with diabetes who used these design pumps, found that all were very satisfied with the improved technology. The positive feedback mainly referred to insulin levels of consistent levels and pleasant wearing comfort of the pump, which is operational with one hand even in hard-to-reach areas of the body.

Medtronic itself says the new infusion set was developed in collaboration with ConvaTec’s subsidiary, Unomedical, and includes many improvements, including less frequent set changes and extended wear time. Both companies have incorporated advanced and stronger materials into the innovation. This also affects the preservative in the insulin, which does not deplete as quickly as a result. The tubing connection is designed to improve the stability of the insulin itself. In addition, the risk of occlusion has been minimized. The skin-friendly, comfortable, and durable skin patch is also a plus point of the Medtronic Extended Infusion Pump.

The infusion set is compatible with all Minimed 600 and 700 series insulin pumps. In addition, the new Medtronic Extended 7-day insulin reservoir has long-lasting stability of the vital hormone produced in the pancreas, as the supply of insulin remains physically and chemically stable for longer. However, no other combination of both parts, infusion set, and the reservoir is possible.

Medtronic’s Diabetes Business recommends the infusion set especially to people who value simplicity in diabetes care, convenience, and environmental friendliness. In addition, the set reduces an additional 50 percent of the plastic waste generated.
