In a joint study, scientists from the University of Bristol and the University of Eastern Finland have identified a correlation between the risk of diabetes and muscular grip strength. In the joint study, 776 Finnish men and women with no history of diabetes were measured using a handgrip dynamometer over a period of 20 years. The results showed that an increase in handle strength by one step reduces the risk of type 2 diabetes by 50 percent. According to the research team, the screening of handgrip values contributes to a better prediction of type 2 diabetes in addition to known risk factors such as age, obesity, diet, alcohol consumption and family history. Furthermore, the gender-specific analysis of the study showed that the results were significantly more pronounced in women. The results also confirm earlier studies that found a 27 percent lower risk of diabetes in people with higher muscle strength levels.
