The German E-Commerce and Mail Order Association, or BEVH for short, surveyed private individuals in this country throughout 2020 to find out what they spend on online and mail-order retailing and what their attitudes are toward digital services. A total of 40,000 people over the age of 14 were surveyed.

According to the analysis, the trend toward buying groceries, medicines and drugstore items online will continue after Corona. The willingness even increases because 75 percent of the online shoppers surveyed would also be willing to order more there.

According to the study, online stores will be a rapid growth market in 2020. If we look only at the total sales of medicines, we see that there has been an increase of 54 percent. Total sales increased to 1.2 billion euros.
However, the main users of e-commerce are senior citizens over the age of 60, known as „silver surfers“, who account for over 30 percent, followed by the second-largest customer group, 50 to 59-year-olds, who account for 25 percent.

Online marketplace businesses are very popular, accounting for almost 50 percent of total sales. This can also be seen in mail-order companies in the pharmacy sector such as DocMorris and Shop-Apotheke. That’s why more and more stationary pharmacies or alliances of them are pushing into this market. Pharmacy service provider Noventi is planning a joint platform in cooperation with Phoenix as a wholesaler. The German Pharmacists Association (DAV) is also showing interest in a timely implementation, because more and more people will make purchases on the Internet, even beyond the Corona pandemic, the industry association is certain.
