gematik, as the Gesellschaft für Telematikanwendungen der Gesundheitskarte mbH (Society for Telematics Applications of the Health Card), wants to fundamentally reform itself and, in the process, transform its architecture with the help of the new TI 2.0 so that improved security and interoperability standards can be enforced that provide clear advantages to user groups such as physicians and pharmacists, as well as patients, for example. The changeover is to take place gradually and is based on six fundamental pillars, which have been outlined in gematik’s new white paper „TI 2.0 – Arena for Digital Medicine“ and can also be read.

For example, identity management is to be redesigned for improved flexibility and user-friendliness. In this context, there is also talk of „eliminating proprietary solutions. For example, health professional cards for identification are to be eliminated, as are institutional cards (SMC-B) and card terminals or even connectors, so that users save costs and operations are stabilized. This includes, among other things, universal accessibility of services via access interfaces online, making it easier for other medical professions to access them. According to gematik, this will make the modern security architecture less vulnerable and more efficient. The linking of data from different sources must be optimized, as well as interoperability, which will lead to an improvement in data quality. In addition, everything should be fully automated to ensure the basic functionalities for more quality, security and to comply with the operating rules. Accordingly, gematik provides these basic functionalities, so to speak, and ensures that digital medicine becomes usable for everyone. The best examples of this are currently the electronic patient record (ePA), the electronic prescription (eRezept), and the digital health applications (DiGA), which represent progress in the digitization process of the healthcare system.
