Ginger is very healthy and is therefore often used as an old household remedy. But the medicinal plant can do even more, as scientists from an Iranian research team of 50 people with type 2 diabetes have now discovered. In one study they proved the positive effect of ginger in chronic periodontitis when they gave ginger as a supplement to diabetic subjects. An anti-inflammatory effect was shown with regard to the pocket depth of the gums of the affected persons. The tuber had other positive effects on the plaque index and bleeding of the gums. The scientists gave ginger in capsule form to an intervention group and a control group, selected at random, a placebo. Both groups also received non-surgical periodontal therapy. It was shown that not only the gums of the affected diabetics benefited from the supplemental ginger intake, but also various metabolic parameters such as the blood sugar level HbA1c and the fasting blood sugar level, both of which improved. The fat metabolism, such as the triglyceride value and the total cholesterol, broken down into the HDL and LDL values, also stood out positively. The scientists published their findings in the „Journal of Herbal Medicine“ and drew a positive conclusion regarding the therapeutic benefits of ginger as a natural remedy. They recommend ginger as a supplement for type 2 diabetics with chronic periodontitis to „control and improve the glycemic, lipemic, antioxidant and periodontal status“.
