Last Friday, the Federal Ministry of Health (BGM) announced the balance for the first quarter of 2020. The statutory health insurance system recorded a deficit of 1.3 billion and financial reserves totalling 18.3 billion. Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn, however, described the figures as „not very meaningful“, as more precise forecasts cannot be made until autumn. Since the difference between revenues and expenditures is expected to continue to rise, he assured the public health insurers of an additional federal subsidy of 3.5 billion euros.

The Health Fund, which provides funds to the health insurances, reports a minus of 3.2 billion euros, which, according to the BMG, is partly due to the fact that income from special payments and pension increases had not yet been included in the calculations in the middle of the year.

On average, the health insurance funds incurred 4% higher administrative costs and 5.7% higher benefit expenses.
