In a new model project, the Techniker Krankenkasse (TK) is testing whether support from digital measuring devices for continuous blood glucose measurement on the upper arm is necessary for milder forms of type 2 diabetes and whether it has a positive effect on the course of the disease in those affected.

If so, the digital aid, which consists of a sensor on the upper arm and a special digital reader, could be included in standard care for all people with type 2 diabetes. TK insurants of type 1 and 2 are currently included in this TK program, provided that an intensified insulin therapy is necessary. Incidentally, glucose (dextrose) is measured in the fluid between individual cells in the skin. 1,000 selected people who are also already enrolled in the structured treatment program „TK-Plus Diabetes mellitus“ can become the participants of the „FreeStyle Libre 2 measuring system model concept.

The digital aid from Abbott can replace the paper diabetes diary thanks to uncomplicated and continuous glucose measurement on the upper arm, which does not require blood to be taken from the finger. It becomes superfluous because the test persons create their own digital diary plan as a patient report, which can then be shown in practice or easily transmitted to the doctor with the appropriate software.

Before this, however, the patient must download the „FreeStyle Libre Link“ app so that the personal data can also be included in the digital patient report. The determination and documentation of the blood glucose level by the reader can also be supplemented by other personal data, including the carbohydrate units consumed, the sports activity completed, and the medicines are taken.
