Corona infection figures are still exploding in Germany. Doctors and nurses are also increasingly becoming infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus in hospitals. Despite infection, some of them have to continue working, especially those who remain asymptomatic, because the situation in some hospitals is precarious. According to research by the taz (Die Tageszeitung), 60 hospitals have massive staff shortages. Therefore, affected hospitals are desperately looking for personnel, including external helpers, preferably with medical expertise, to get the difficult hospital situations under control. The eastern German states such as Thuringia and Brandenburg are particularly affected, but the Main-Kinzig-Klinik also speaks of an extreme emergency.

Infected doctors and nurses can infect others even if they remain asymptomatic, so there is much criticism. The doctors‘ association Marburger Bund even speaks of a violation of the quarantine ordinance, because contact persons in a total of 15 hospitals also continue to be employed, according to the taz. At the same time, an analysis of British studies shows that severe Covid-19 illnesses occur especially among medical staff. According to this study, hospital personnel have a seven-fold increased risk of suffering a severe course. Among medical support staff, there is even a nine-fold increased risk (we reported earlier).

However, the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) has introduced an exemption rule that allows the continued employment of infected workers in hospitals in cases of urgent staff shortages, when other measures have already been exhausted. To date, 34,760 employees have already been infected with the virus, and the trend is still rising.

Nursing homes are also affected. The German Nursing Management Association has reported to the taz that Corona outbreaks have already occurred in nursing homes for the elderly, such as in Bremen among people with mental disabilities. The experts warn against mistakes already when putting on protective clothing, because this can lead to a possible transmission of the virus and thus „against playing with fire“. It is better to go into quarantine immediately, they said.
