Scientists at the renowned Johann Wofgang Goethe University in Frankfurt are investigating the connection between diabetes and obesity (adiposity) in connection with Alzheimer’s disease, as it has long been suspected that all factors could be related. After all, unhealthy food and lack of exercise can increase the risk of developing type 2 diabetes. It is also possible that the risk of developing dementia is also increased by this multiple exposures. To find out, 80 patients with type 2 diabetes who are currently not being treated are currently being monitored via smartphone programs with the aid of apps that tap into questions and tasks relating to lifestyle and mental performance. The exercise behaviour of the study participants, nutrition, stress perception and several other parameters are also included in the international study conducted by the Frankfurt research institute. This is followed by a comparison with another study that analyses test persons who are not diabetics. The analyses of the mobile phone apps are ultimately intended to clarify whether there is a connection between the various diseases, because 500,000 people throughout Germany are now suffering from diabetes and 300,000 from dementia such as Alzheimer’s, and the trend is rising for both diagnoses.
