The Funke media group reports through its newspapers that 72 percent of the German population believes that the introduction of the electronic patient file (ePA) will lead to better medical treatment and fewer duplicate examinations. These survey results are the result of a representative analysis carried out by the German Federal Association of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers (BAH), which at the same time would like to have the right to request voluntarily donated data from patients for research purposes for the development of new drugs and medical products. At the same time, however, the Patient Data Protection Act is to take effect, as 46 per cent of all ePA users fear that their personal data, including findings, X-rays, vaccination certificates, dental bonus booklets etc., could be misused by unauthorised persons. The BAH survey also revealed that 27 percent intend to refuse to include data records in the ePA for this reason. 53 per cent of all users want to grant access only to certain doctors in the near future, starting in January 2021. Also, only certain data from findings will then be transferred to the ePA. On the other hand, 71 per cent of all users agree that their data sets should be available for research purposes of the drug manufacturers. The German government has already reacted to this and has just introduced a bill in the Bundestag for the protection of patient data.
