The 5th Digital Health Prize 2022 will be awarded on March 24, 2022 by Novartis, a renowned biotechnology and pharmaceutical company, for the best innovative ideas in the field of digital health solutions. Startups, tech or e-health companies, and research teams from university institutions can apply until the end of this month to possibly be one of seven projects in the final selection.

An expert panel of decision-makers from the startup scene, patient organizations, hospitals and universities will decide on the winners of the first and second prizes, but will also award the special prize in the category focusing on „people with disabilities.“ The special prize is worth 10,000 euros, as is the third-place project, which is also chosen with the approval of the audience. The two winners (1st and 2nd place) will each receive 25,000 and 15,000 euros respectively as a reward for transformational ideas in tomorrow’s healthcare.

The jury has determined that three topics will be the focus of the selection process, including Digital Nursing Applications (DiPA) and the networking of clinical processes, but also digital medical technology, which can be particularly valuable if it adds value for patients.

Digital Nursing Applications, or DiPA, which are among next year’s Trending Topics, will not be available on prescription until 2022. They are intended to relieve nursing staff in care-specific situations and help patients improve their state of health.

The networking of clinical processes is always at the forefront if the supply chain is to gain efficiency. All players in the healthcare system, including patients, can benefit from the new communication and cooperation channels.

Digital medical technology is an essential component of healthcare and thus indispensable for improving the quality of life of the sick. Innovative projects can therefore be guided by medical technology solutions, but artificial intelligence (AI) projects, with new screening technologies and robotic movement therapies, for example, can also provide better care for sufferers.

Last year, the first prize in the latter category went to the company StomAware, which can support stoma carriers with its innovative project. The three young founders of StomAware received the Digital Health Award for improving the quality of life of those affected. The StomaGuard system product allows patients with an artificial bowel outlet to read the filling level of the stoma bag in real time using smartphone technology. The system then also warns when the fill level of the collection bag is critical.
