Corona vaccination may soon be mandatory in the U.S., as 58 professional societies are now calling for it, echoing a statement by an oncologist and bioethicist, Ezekiel Emanuel of Pennsylvania University in Philadelphia.

Emanuel recently stated that in order to ensure the health of vulnerable groups in hospitals and care facilities, staff and employees have an ethical obligation.

The delta variant of the SARS-CoV-2 virus, which is much more contagious, is also rampant in the United States. In addition, experts have criticized healthcare vaccination rates as being far too low. While they are higher than in the general population, 25 percent of all hospital employees were not vaccinated at the end of May, and even more than 40 percent were not vaccinated in nursing facilities.

In the U.S., mandatory vaccination is legally possible. Many hospital and nursing home operators have already taken advantage of it, requiring employees to get vaccinated for the health and well-being of others. Mandatory flu vaccination has also already been implemented by hospital employers. Now, U.S. professional societies are calling for mandatory Corona vaccination for employees of nursing professions. Employers should follow the recommendation of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which says it does not discriminate against employees.
