Ketogenic diets can cause flu-like symptoms at the beginning of a dietary change, according to findings of a recent study by scientists at the University of Tasmania. However, the study was evaluated without any actual evidence from those affected, because only online forums and their conversations led to the conclusion that certain disease symptoms such as fatigue, dizziness, fainting, loss of energy reserves can occur as side effects of the ketogenic diet phases. In social media, experiences in the health sector were then exchanged and subsequently evaluated, which, however, showed a certain agreement with medical research carried out in earlier times. The results of 101 people from 42 online discussions and conversations provided confirmation that a ketogenic diet causes side effects that peak about one week after the changeover and then subside again after four weeks, although the symptoms, severity and course of time can vary considerably. Headaches, concentration problems and gastrointestinal complaints can also be side effects and disappear after a certain time. The ketogenic diet usually consists mainly only of proteins and fats; carbohydrates are almost completely avoided in order to put the body into ketosis, i.e. the body burns almost exclusively fats instead of the usual amount of carbohydrates in order to gain energy. This not only leads to rapid weight loss and improved cognitive performance. Some people who have type 2 diabetes or cancer also try this dietary change.
