Medical foot care has been prescribable since 1 July 2020 if there is evidence of damage to the foot that is similar or identical to diabetic foot syndrome and is due to similar sensory disturbances as a result of neuropathies and paraplegia. The Federal Joint Committee (Gemeinsamer Bundesausschuss, G-BA) previously only guaranteed that the costs would be covered by the health insurance companies for those with statutory health insurance after the diabetic foot syndrome had been diagnosed. Doctors can, therefore, prescribe podology therapy if medical foot care can prevent damage to the skin or cornea and toenails with severe inflammation of the foot. All patients with statutory health insurance are then entitled to such foot treatment. In the future, doctors will be allowed to prescribe medical foot care more often than is covered by health insurance if the removal of calluses and the treatment of nails helps to prevent serious damage to the foot.
