After the publication of the health care expenditure for Germany in 2018, compared to 2019, a clear trend can be seen. Expenditure continues to rise. Whereas in 2018 they amounted to 390.6 billion euros, which statistically means 4,712 euros per German citizen, estimates for 2019 assume 407.4 billion euros. This would mean that health expenditure in 2019 would be 4.3 percent higher than in 2018. Further details on 2018 were also announced: According to this, more than half of the health care expenditure was financed by the social security contributions of employees, without taking pensioners into account. They contributed 97.7 billion, while employers contributed 91.5 billion. But also state expenditure of 53.5 billion euros from the federal subsidy to the health fund and from subsidies from public employers must be added. The total share of health expenditure in the gross domestic product in 2018 was 11.7 percent, 0.1 percentage points more than in the previous year, i.e. 2017. The shares of expenditure in the various sectors are as follows: The SHI system heads the list with 56.9 percent. This sector spent a total of 222.1 billion euros, followed by private households and private non-profit organizations, which, with 13.3 percent, occupy the second place for most of the expenditure shares. The social long-term care insurance is in second place with 10.1 per cent, although this is the sector that saw the strongest percentage increase in expenditure in 2018. The statisticians of the survey put the increase in costs at 6.2 percent to a total of 39.5 billion euros. In fourth place comes private health insurance, which accounted for 8.5 percent of all health expenditure. Private health insurers‘ expenditures rose by 1.6 billion euros, or about five percent, to a total of 33.3 billion euros, according to the analysis.
