It was recently decided in the Bundestag that the health and care sector should become more digital. The Digital Care and Nursing Modernization Act, or DVPMG for short, is a law that is intended to contribute to the digital modernization of healthcare and nursing. Video consultations, as well as electronic patient records (ePA) and e-prescriptions, for example, are intended to help improve telemedical care in the future.

For example, people with serious or chronic illnesses will benefit from apps and digital applications, such as digital health apps (DiGA), through exercises and training for dementia and for rehabilitation after falls. However, digital apps should in no way be replaced by human attention, Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn makes clear in a statement issued on the subject. In nursing care, digital applications, so-called DiPA can also help to improve the health of those in need of care, but without neglecting communication with nursing staff.

In the areas of prevention of fall risk, for personalized memory games, for people with dementia and for the care of pressure ulcer cases, such digital care applications come into consideration, but still have to be tested for reimbursability. After that, the DiPA would be included in a corresponding list at the Federal Institute for Drugs and Medical Devices (BfArM).

Digital health applications (DiGA) are already reimbursed by insurers, but will also be further developed and improved by the new law. In addition, the telematics infrastructure (TI) is getting an overhaul so that in the future all players in the healthcare system will benefit equally and sustainably from access to the TI. Insured persons, service providers and payers are to be given secure access adapted to their needs, which is to be worked out by gematik so that networking in the healthcare system becomes more modern and efficient.
