In a new study, American scientists have investigated intestinal health and the risk of developing colorectal cancer concerning previous nutritional studies. According to this study, various nutritional factors have a significant positive and negative influence on our intestinal health.

In a so-called umbrella review, Sajesh K. Veettil of the University of Utah evaluated 45 former meta-analyses. They concluded that red meat and alcohol are clearly bad for the colon. However, the researchers also found that foods can have a preventive effect against colon cancer. These are mainly fiber and yogurt, as well as calcium in the diet. Foods such as other dairy products, whole grains, and processed meats have not yet been studied in more detail. Further studies have yet to follow.

However, it is already apparent that the risk of colorectal carcinomas, i.e., malignant tumors of the colon (small intestine) and rectum (rectum), can be positively influenced by the right diet. This is why nutrition experts such as Kate Zeratsky from the Mayo Clinic in the USA recommend foods rich in nutrients and fiber. However, the switch to them should be made slowly and with plenty of fluids. A high-fiber diet prevents not only colon cancer but also other diseases such as diabetes and chronic bowel disease. Hemorrhoids and diverticula can be prevented in such a way as well as possible cancer and its precursors, the colon polyps. Zeratsky recommends fresh fruit and vegetables in particular, but also nuts and seeds, as well as a normal weight, which also contributes positively to intestinal health.
