The German healthcare system may be treating many people who do not have adequate health insurance coverage, according to the federal government’s response to a small question from the FDP in the Bundestag.
2019 was the last time the statistical figures were collected, which are updated every four years. According to the report, there were 61,000 people last year who were affected by insufficient health insurance coverage – figures for people without papers not included.
The reasons for the lack of health insurance coverage vary widely, according to the evaluation. Often, insurance coverage was already unclear in the home country. This applies, for example, to people from Eastern or Southeastern Europe.
Doctors who treat people without this protection are even obliged to do so because carrying over an acute illness is not only dangerous for those affected but also places an enormous burden on the German healthcare system. Immense consequential damage can result, for example, from cardiovascular diseases such as heart attacks and strokes, but also from diabetes mellitus.
