When relatives of elderly people in need of care are overburdened with the care in their home environment, a bad conscience often arises when the sick close relative is to be accommodated in a nursing home, because the health conditions on both sides make a search necessary. The chairwoman of the Protestant Professional and Trade Association for Nursing and Health, Ulrike Döring, and at the same time a member of the German Nursing Council, is available with tips and advice, which relatives can also obtain, by the way, at advice centres run by health insurance companies, local authorities and the independent welfare service. Mrs Döhring considers such advice to be absolutely necessary because advice does not mean that you are looking for a place in a nursing home. Often, accommodation in a short-term care facility is sufficient to allow relatives to go on holiday without stress, to recover and regenerate. The health of the carers, therefore, plays a very important role in the lengthy and well-considered process of finding a home. The state of health of the person to be cared for must not be ignored either, as dementia patients, for example, require care around the clock. Ulrike Döhring is in any case of the opinion that the love for the parents, who, for example, need to be cared for, has nothing to do with whether one cares for them oneself or whether one leaves the exhausting and intensive work to others, who may be better at it. A long preparation time with many discussions with all those involved in the care process helps in the search for adequate accommodation. In the end, there will be more time for pleasant hours together.
