In an interview with Professor Uta Merle from Heidelberg University Hospital published by Apotheken-Umschau, the expert talks about post-Covid symptoms and her study with 150 patients. In about 40 percent of those affected, noticeable consequential damage remained after Covid 19. In the study, 60 percent said they no longer felt anything 20 weeks after the first symptoms appeared. However, when asked for details, some of them did cite permanent impairments.

The symptom most frequently mentioned was fatigue, a typical symptom after corona infection, meaning exhaustion and tiredness. But some also complained of coughing and shortness of breath, thick mucus in the throat, diarrhea, joint pain, blood pressure fluctuations, hair loss, sleep disturbances, and anxiety. In the case of the latter, Prof. Merle cannot explain the exact cause.

Affected people after inpatient treatments and people who received outpatient care as corona cab patients participated in the follow-up, but not very mild cases, which is why the expert cannot classify the mild courses. As a result of the follow-up, Merle suspects that there is a wider range of sequelae in Corona patients who are considered cured than in people with cured flu. The reasons for this, however, are still unexplored.

Persistent symptoms are present in young people as well as in those not previously ill. However, the severity of the illness is related to age and previous illness. Young, healthy individuals are much less likely to be in intensive care units, according to infectious disease specialists. However, a doctor’s consultation is important even in the case of mild after-effects of the disease to be able to analyze the symptoms in more detail and learn from them in the future. General practitioners, university clinics, and so-called post-Covid 19 outpatient clinics are good places to start. Aftercare consultations and post-Covid, outpatient clinics are located in Jena, Hannover, Berlin, and Cologne.

The expert’s overall conclusion is sobering because it is as important as possible that few people should be infected by the time they are vaccinated. The late effects do not impair their quality of life over a long time or in the long term.
