Experts from the US health authority CDC are drawing attention to cases of myocarditis and pericarditis in young men up to 30 years of age within a week of being vaccinated against Covid-19 with mRNA vaccine from BionTech/Pfizer or Moderna.

All experts are still in favor of vaccinations against Covid-19 because the benefits outweigh the risks. However, in very young people, one has to weigh up whether vaccination really makes sense because most children and adolescents only fall ill slightly. However, 95 percent of all heart diseases are milder cases, confirms SPD health expert Karl Lauterbach, who was informed about the results of the American analysis.

There have been 323 confirmed cases of myocarditis (inflammation of the heart muscle) and pericarditis (inflammation of the heart sac) so far. Another 150 suspected cases are still under investigation. These inflammatory reactions occurred in one in 16,000 cases after vaccination. The numbers are low, yet experts did not expect such a magnitude of illnesses in this age group.

Corona infection has caused the death of 300 children in the states; 3,000 had to be hospitalized, the comparison shows. 309 patients, nine of whom are still undergoing treatment, had to be admitted as inpatients. As far as is known today, 218 patients have recovered completely, with young women not being affected as much. There have also been no deaths so far. However, 50 million vaccine doses have also been distributed to 12-29 year-olds to date.

However, not only the mRNA vaccines can trigger this sometimes severe disease, but also viruses of the respiratory tract and the gastrointestinal tract, which is why one should take it easy for up to six months after a viral infection in order not to fall ill with inflammatory reactions of the heart. These symptoms include fatigue, shortness of breath, and cardiac arrhythmia. For this reason, experts warn against too early sporting activity and prescribe rest. In severe forms of inflammation of the heart muscle tissue (myocardium) cells, drugs can help hold back the inflammatory processes and normalize the pumping function of the heart.
