University hospitals in Germany and company health insurance funds reached an agreement in early May to work more closely together in the future. The aim of the cooperation between the Association of University Hospitals in Germany (VUD) and the BBK umbrella organization (BKK DV) is to improve digital care following hospitalization in order to better coordinate and manage the treatment of discharged patients.

The focus should not be on the administrative act, but on the insured person and his or her illness, which must be further cared for on an outpatient basis after the inpatient stay, for example in a rehabilitation or nursing facility. The transition must be fluid and digitized, explains BBK DV board member Franz Knieps. It is now possible for the health insurance companies to promote digital projects since 2019 due to the Digital Care Act (DVG) that came into force. The umbrella organization now wants to participate in the digitization of discharge management with innovative and digital tools.

So-called occupational health management is now also to be made usable in university hospitals for the staff there, following the examples in industry and medium-sized companies. Employees of these companies can already participate in health-promoting measures via an app. This should benefit the company, but also the staff in view of the shortage of skilled workers.
