Around three million people in Germany suffer from chronic and non-healing wounds that can benefit from cold plasma therapies. According to the study, atmospheric cold plasma can kill microorganisms, especially viruses, bacteria, and multi-resistant germs (MRE). It thus has both bactericidal and fungicidal effects.

According to the findings to date, it does not harm the human organism. Its effectiveness as a mobile medical device lies in efficiently killing all pathogens after debridement (wound cleansing) without causing allergies and pain. A reduction in antibiotic and cortisone therapies is also associated with its use, as this helps prevent resistance. Anti-inflammatory drugs are therefore also used less frequently.

In nursing and inpatient care, widespread use is advantageous, for example, to prevent postoperative infections, reducing hospital stays. In retirement homes, for example, the mobile cold plasma device can help improve the quality of life because atmospheric cold plasma kills germs by physicochemical means, thus preventing chronic wounds such as diabetic foot syndrome (DFS).

The product was developed by terraplasma medical GmbH, which launched plasma care® for the treatment of chronic wounds in 2019 following approval. In 2021, plasma derma care® was followed for the treatment of skin diseases caused by germs. Currently, the company is working on mobile hand-held devices for the mouth and throat (plasma intensive care®) to reduce bacteria. The approval process is currently underway to treat intensive care patients, particularly those requiring artificial respiration.

The cold plasma treatment is to be marketed by Viromed GmbH, which has many years of experience in disinfection and research into SARS viruses. The plasma care® medical technology is to be used extensively in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, explains terraplasma medical, which intends to count mainly acute clinics, hospitals, and rehabilitation facilities, nursing facilities and retirement homes, and mobile care services among its customers. The devices are small, handy, and easy to use but are highly effective in preventing serious infections.
