Nursing homes are by far the favourite form of care for the elderly. This was noted in the recently published representative survey of the German Health Insurance (DKV) in people under 66 years. Therefore, only seven per cent of people of working age in the case of care move into a retirement home. More than half of the respondents also felt nursing care is not financially secure enough, especially in the Eastern states.
The survey found 28 percent of respondents wish to be cared for by their relatives. Also, 28 percent favoured care in a shared apartment with other patients and nursing staff.
24 percent want to be cared for at home by a nursing service. Here, most men would opt for care from relatives at home, while the majority of women would move to a nursing home.
