In mid-2012, health insurance companies have continued to save millions in contributions: following recent statements by the Federal Statistical Office, the surpluses in the GKV stand at well over EUR 20 billion. The health funds, in the first half of 2012 alone, created a surplus of 4.9 billion euros.

For the coming year, experts predict that the public health funds will again accumulate EUR 1.6 billion – which by 2014 would provide a further surplus of EUR 14 billion.

Health Minister Bahr and other FDP politicians are therefore calling for the abolition of the practice fee. Previously, the ministry had rejected the reduction of health insurance contribution. Howecer, German Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) moved away from this rejection of the abolition of the fee. The Chancellor will consider the overall picture of the statutory health insurance (GKV) and will examine all arguments.
