In the provisional hospital statistics published bythe Statistiche Bundesamt, several indicators show that the efficiency trend in hospitals continues. In detail, this trend means that more and more patients are being treated and for a shorter duration too. Thus, the number of patients treated in 2011 grew by 300,000 persons (1.6%) to 18.3 million patients on the previous year. The length of stay also decreased in the same period by 0.2 days, falling from 7.9 to 7.7 days on average.
The consequence of these indicators was more work for the staff, in turn leading to 2.8% more full-time employees being hired, so that in 2011 there were on average 839,000 people fully employed in German hospitals.
