The sickness funds fee has been abolished nine years after it was introduced again. On Monday in Berlin, the FDP, together with the CDU and CSU in Berlin announced that the payment of ten euros will no longer be in place as of the 1st January 2013. A reduction in health insurance premiums will be waived, however.

Given the billions of surplus currently available in the public sickness fund, the coalition also decided the federal grant for this pot in 2013 will be shortened by EUR 500 million to EUR 2 billion.

Commentary: Overall, the reductions in the statutory health insurance alone for the next two years will add up to around EUR 8.5 billion. The funds have received about 2 billion annually, which will disappear without replacement. Given the surplus in the GKV of 28 billion euros, this is likely to be manageable.
