Speculations regarding the surplus of health funds and the statutory health care fund have ceased: At the end of 2011, the health funds held reserves in the amount of 10 billion Euro, while the statutory health care fund had about 9.5 billion Euro, according to the German Federal Health Department (BMG).
The reason for the funds‘ surpluses are decreased costs for pharmaceuticals. The decisive factors for the good result for the statutory health care fund were an increase in the contribution rate and positive developments concerning wages and employment numbers.
