The chairman of the German Association for Nursing Management, Peter Bechtel, emphasized in connection with the surpluses of the statutory health insurances that a state of emergency in nursing already existed which made discussions relating to the surpluses appear ‚paradoxical‘.
Figures published by the German Office of Statistics showed that there was a shortage of about 140,000 full-time nursing positions in the hospital sector as early as 2010. In 2007 there were already 2.2 million persons dependent on care in Germany and this number will probably rise to 3.4 million by 2030.
These developments force carers to take more and more responsibility. Furthermore, uniform tools to assess the needs and provide a performance record and statement of charges would be necessary. „Social recognition, however, must also be reflected in the payment they receive“, added Bechtel.
